Fraser Family Dental Clinic offers many procedures for our patients. One of the most common procedures is the root canal. If you are experiencing pain, tenderness around the tooth, or prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, then you should contact our office.

Root canals are required when the pulp inside the canal of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected. Most patients have symptoms prior to needing a root canal, but there are patients that do not experience any symptoms at all.  It is important to get regular dental checkups to avoid serious issues. If a root canal is left untreated, an abscess can form, and the infection could get worse. If you experience any symptoms, do not hesitate to call our office.

Root canals can be caused by tooth decay, injury to the tooth, or a crack in the tooth. They can last a lifetime if cared for properly, and have a success rate of over 95%. Our team ensures the root canal is filled and sealed. Once the procedure is complete, a custom crown is made, and the tooth is capped with a temporary crown. A follow up appointment is usually necessary to install the permanent crown.

Tips to make your root canal last:

  • Use good oral hygiene habits with regular brushing and flossing to keep the area surrounding the root canal healthy. If the seal becomes weak bacteria can enter the tooth, but this is uncommon.
  • Attend regular dental checkups to ensure the root canal looks healthy and stable.
  • Any pain should not be ignored after the root canal procedure. Contact our office right away if you experience any issues.

Recovery is minimal, and patients may have some pain, but this will go away after a few days. Root canals have a very high success rate if they are cared for properly at home.
