Restorative Dentistry in Vancouver B.C.

Fraser Family Dental Practice recommends that individuals get dental cleanings every six months. It is important to know that most patients will need restorative dental work in their lifetime. The term “restorative dentistry” is used to describe the treatment plan to manage current oral health problems to restore your mouth to not only a functional state, but an aesthetic state, as well. Many patients wonder what types of dental issues require restorative dentistry and what options are available to correct the issues.

During your routine dental visit our highly trained staff will check your mouth for any chipped, cracked, decayed, discolored, or missing teeth. To do a thorough check mechanical, radiographic, and visual techniques are used to inspect your teeth’s surface. Based on the findings from your visit we will go over any concerns and treatment options at that point. Some treatment options may be completed within one visit, whereas other options may require a few visits. Our goal with restorative dentistry is to preserve as many of your natural teeth as possible.

Direct tooth restoration can usually be accomplished in one dental visit. This procedure will involve filling the affected tooth’s prepared cavity using a variety of options. When dealing with fillings on molars some patients will opt for amalgam since the silver color will not be easily seen. When it comes to fillings in teeth you can see in your smile, most patients prefer the composite material that is tooth colored and not easily noticed.

Indirect tooth restoration usually takes more than one appointment to be completed. These procedures include crowns, inlays, and onlays. Crowns cover the entire portion of the affected tooth and can be fabricated from gold, porcelain or another ceramic material.  Inlays are used to numerous surfaces of a tooth, and are made from gold, porcelain or other ceramic materials. Onlays, on the other hand, are designed to restore the chewing surface and can be made from the same materials as inlays.
