Root canals are one of the most common dental procedures performed. At Fraser Family Dental Clinic, a root canal is recommended when the pulp or soft tissue inside the root canal is either inflamed or infected. This inflammation is caused by bacteria, tooth decay, or even a crack or injury to the tooth.
Patients may experience symptoms alerting them that something is wrong. However, there are times when no symptoms are present, so it is important to schedule regular visits with our office. If left untreated, an abscess can form, and the infection and pain will get worse.
Root Canal Symptoms you should not ignore:
- Tenderness while chewing food, or tenderness in the mouth or around the tooth.
- Pain around the tooth or prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold.
- Drainage or swelling around the tooth.
- Tooth discoloration.
- Bone or tissue feels tender to the touch.
- Lymph nodes feel tender.
Once our team at Fraser Family has evaluated any concerns our patients have, we will discuss the recommended treatment options. During the root canal procedure, our skilled staff will remove any infected pulp and clean out the root canal. Once this is complete, the space is sealed and filled.
We use local anesthesia to minimize any pain or discomfort, and to keep our patients relaxed during the procedure. A crown is then custom made to fit over the tooth, and installed during a follow up appointment. In the interim, a temporary crown is placed over the tooth until the permanent crown is installed.
Recovery is minimal with some pain around the tooth or area for a few days after the procedure. Good oral hygiene with brushing and flossing daily is recommended, to ensure the root canal stays in good condition. Root canals can last for years, or even a lifetime with good oral hygiene.
